Training and Support

What training will I receive?

Training is taken entirely at your own pace and no one is expected to go solo in any of our volunteering roles until they feel entirely confident in the role.  Training includes:

  • an introductory visit;
  • shadowing experienced volunteers to see volunteering in practice;
  • one-to-one, or small group, training session
  • continuing support as required from The Risk Factory staff and volunteer team; and
  • ongoing training to ensure the whole team remains 'on message'.

We also run occasional "interest" training sessions such visits in the past have included a tour of the Trams Depot at Gogar and a visits to the CCTV Central Monitoring Suite in the City Chambers. More information can be found here.

Can I claim expenses?

We would not expect our volunteers to be out of pocket as a result of volunteering with us. All volunteers may claim reasonable expenses to reimburse travel costs and if you volunteer for the whole day, we also cover the cost of your lunch, further details are provided in our Volunteer Manual.

What do I wear?

The Risk Factory provides a uniform consisting of a polo shirt and / or sweatshirt for wearing whilst volunteering. This is issued once training is complete and on receipt of a satisfactory PVG certificate. During a volunteers training period we ask that people wear smart-casual clothes, we ask that everyone wears sensible shoes at all times.
